A first dermatology visit is, above all, an examination and a conversation. The better prepared you arrive, the more targeted the resulting plan will be.

What to bring

A list of the medicines and supplements you take, previous tests or reports related to your skin, and photos if the problem comes and goes (for example a rash that has since cleared).

What to avoid on the day

Heavy make-up, nail polish and products that change the appearance of the skin, such as self-tanners. For scalp concerns, avoid styling products on the morning of the visit.

Questions worth asking

What is the diagnosis and what are the alternative treatments? What can realistically be achieved, and in how long? What are the possible side effects and what does maintenance involve? The answers define your expectations — and a good plan starts with realistic ones.
