Laser hair removal is one of the most popular treatments — and one of the most misunderstood. Before you start, these are the things worth knowing.
1. The laser targets pigment
The energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair. This is why dark hair on light skin responds best, while white or very blond hair cannot be treated with the method.
2. A course of sessions is needed
The follicle is affected only during the growth phase of the hair. Because not all hairs are in the same phase at once, 6–8 sessions every 4–8 weeks are usually required.
3. Sun is the main limitation
Tanned skin absorbs more energy, increasing the risk of burns and pigment changes. Two to four weeks without sun exposure before and after each session are essential.
4. Shaving only between sessions
Waxing, tweezing and epilators remove the hair from the root — and with it the laser's target.
5. Some medicines postpone treatment
Photosensitising drugs and isotretinoin require a waiting period. Always tell the doctor what you are taking.
6. "Permanent reduction", not "permanent disappearance"
After the course, hair growth is reduced significantly and lastingly. Some fine hairs may reappear over the years or with hormonal changes and need maintenance sessions.
7. Who performs the treatment matters
Laser parameters must be adapted to phototype, area and history. At the clinic, planning and supervision are done by a dermatologist, with certified equipment.
